In journaling today, I used it to work through a recent situation in which I surprisingly reacted negatively, but caught me off guard. I found that journaling in this case, in order to process and better understand the cause and reaction, was very helpful in first letting go some of the negative feelings which lingered. Its funny how a part of yourself can surface that you weren't even aware of and keep you in an unconscious state. Journaling helped to process these feelings and thoughts and thus be at a much better place than just stewing in them. It also provided a good idea for furthering the awareness of the causing of the emotions.
To sum it up, try journaling when you're feeling negative, you may learn something interesting.
